I Asked My Students What AI Couldn’t Replace.

Their Answers Surprised Me.

Artificial intelligence has changed education.

Students can ask AI to solve calculus problems, explain difficult concepts, generate practice questions, and even check their work in seconds. As a math educator, I could have viewed that as competition.

Instead, I decided to ask a different question.

I recently surveyed several of my students from this past year. I asked them five simple questions about what I provided in our tutoring sessions that AI could not. I wasn’t looking for compliments. I genuinely wanted to understand where an experienced teacher still adds value in a world where information is available instantly.

Their responses were thoughtful, honest, and surprisingly consistent.

The biggest takeaway? Students don’t need another source of answers.

They need someone who helps them truly understand.

One student wrote:

“You actually got to know how I learned. If I didn’t understand something, you could tell and explain it differently until it made sense.”

Another shared:

“AI can give answers, but it can’t replace a teacher who actually cares if you understand.”

That distinction matters.

AI is incredibly good at providing information.

Teaching is something different.

The themes that appeared repeatedly

As I read through every response, the same ideas kept surfacing.

  1. Personal relationships matter.

One student said something I’ll never forget:

“It made me feel seen.”

They weren’t talking about math.

They were talking about beginning each tutoring session with a conversation, remembering details about their lives, and knowing that someone genuinely cared about them as a person.

Learning happens best when students feel known.

  1. Personalized teaching is irreplaceable.

Several students explained that when they were confused, I didn’t simply repeat the same explanation. I changed my approach until it matched how they were thinking.

One student wrote:

“You explained things in a way that matched how I was thinking.”

That’s the difference between presenting information and teaching.

  1. Concepts matter more than individual problems.

One response especially stood out:

“AI gives help on certain problems. Real-world tutors give help on entire concepts and subjects.”

That perfectly captures what effective tutoring should be.

My goal has never been to help students finish tonight’s homework, although we certainly accomplish that most sessions.

My goal is to help them understand the mathematics well enough that tomorrow’s homework becomes easier too.

  1. Confidence is part of learning.

Several students mentioned something that often gets overlooked.

They talked about becoming less stressed.

Feeling more comfortable asking questions.

Building confidence.

One student wrote:

“You make learning less stressful and help build confidence.”

Sometimes the greatest obstacle isn’t the math itself.

It’s believing you’re capable of learning it.

  1. Great teaching asks questions instead of simply giving answers.

One student reflected on a moment when they felt stuck:

“Instead of just showing me the answer, you asked me questions that helped me figure it out myself.”

That’s exactly what I hope happens during every tutoring session.

Learning isn’t about watching someone else solve problems.

It’s about developing the ability to solve them yourself.

So… where does AI fit in?

I also asked students how they thought AI should be used in tutoring and learning.

One student suggested something I completely agree with.

AI is excellent for:

  • generating extra practice problems
  • reviewing concepts
  • checking work
  • offering alternative explanations

Then tutoring can focus on what matters most:

  • identifying misconceptions
  • answering deeper questions
  • building understanding
  • connecting ideas
  • developing confidence

That doesn’t sound like competition.

It sounds like partnership.

What this means for the future of MaThCliX®

Reading these responses reminded me why I started teaching more than two decades ago.

Students didn’t describe my value by saying I knew more math than AI.

They didn’t mention faster solutions or more formulas.

Instead, they described feeling understood.

They described patience.

They described confidence.

They described having someone who adapted explanations until the concepts finally clicked.

Technology will continue to evolve.

Students will always have greater access to information than ever before.

That’s exciting.

But information alone has never been enough.

Students still need encouragement.

They still need accountability.

They still need someone who recognizes when they’re confused before they even say a word.

They still need someone who celebrates the moment when confusion becomes understanding.

That’s what I hope every student experiences at MaThCliX®.

AI can provide answers.

My mission is to help students become confident thinkers who understand why those answers work.

And according to my students, that is a difference that still matters.
